Chaoyangopterids represents a group relatively close to the origins of Azhdarchidae, and seems to have many azhdarchid features except for the ridiculous necks. Here is shown a composite from most chaoyangopterids, with a skull reconstructed from Shenzhoupterus chaoyangopterus. Grey represents material not really known among any of the chaoyangopterid taxa, which seems odd and focused towards the fore-quarters.
Posture is based on the quad-launch posture of Mike Habib, following analysis by Jim Cunningham, and cooperative work with Mark Witton. There are folks, like Sankar Chatterjee, who disagree with this model, but their argument is so far unsubstantiated. I initially disagreed with Scott on the effective presentation of skeletals in this general manner, but after tracking back through my other postures, I think this one is nice enough as presentations go ... and I sorta support Habib's argument.
Great band, and a great pterosaur!
