The Devil truly wears spectacles, for the eyes are faced with two large flanges that project outward, like the tiny little glasses that used to be worn on the nose a century and more ago.

This is Moloch horridus, otherwise known as the Texas Horny Devil or the Horny Toad (even though it's a lizard). (I don't think it really, really likes sex all that much, though ;).)

I wonder. To my eyes, the skull (as with conolophus) shows very few signs of how thorny they are. Some theropod skulls show all kinds of knobbly protuberences, so I wonder if most of us have been too conservative in restoring them?

The key here is not the superficial appearance, such as the shape of the underlying bone, but the microtexture of the bone, which according to new work would have a mottle texture designed to bone to the dermal "horns" of the skull not clearly apparent. It's hard without the right techniques to investigate the superficial appearance of extinct animals.

Whose new work???? This sounds fascinating! Got a link? it might help me with some restorations I'm planning on making. I look for dramatic.

Or pretty. Or sexy. No sexy dinos though.

That would be strange!!!!! :omfg:

I am planning a new "mural" sketch, brand new. More trouble for giant sauropods! Likely be uploaded next week. I would love to get your opinion when I do. You do excellent work, much better than I could do on skeletals!

This approaches photographic quality- particularly the dorsal view. I'm impressed.

Fantastic work here. I'm fascinated by skulls, and this is a particularly interesting one. Really nice work on the shading. I find when drawing skulls it's easy for it to become confusing for the viewer, and even with this being a relatively complex skull you've done a great job making it easy to pick out one part from the next. Great work!

The trick is finding a skull that is unusual, and Moloch is very unusual looking. This allows the image of the skull to become art, rather than science :)

Thanks.

From the side it looks just like a dinosaur skull, but from the front and top not...
Anyway, it's great looking, very detailed!
Wehere did you get the reference from?

thanks a lot for the link!
I can see why you say this site is wonderful, It's genius!
I hope I can get more Ideas from the bones, since they give a lot more freedom than seeing the animals alive.
