In contradiction to everything I said at the end of my post here -
[link] - I decided to submit at least to one of the
All Yesterdays contests, this one held by the guys at Love in the Time of Chasmosaurs (Dave, Marc, Niroot and Asher) -
[link]. I'm not really interested in the prizes, but I decided it would be a kick in the butt to work on something stylistic and colorful ... one in which I could see if, in fact, I can color. I stuck to mostly earth tones, and borrowed heavily from coloration in very showy birds, like peafowl and lyrebirds.
I chose this subject to show that one of the biggest theropods in the Djadokhta,
Citipati osmolskae, was probably not too concerned about hiding itself from predators, may have been able to kick
Velociraptor's butt, colors or no colors.
And fun coincidence, as I am working on a V, and strongly considering making it as foul looking as possible (to counter all the cool-looking V.'s out there
Well, my assumption is that Citipati osmolskae is heavier than Velociraptor mongoliensis, and given the robustness of the limbs and size of the leg muscle attachment sites and possibly also the arm, probably had greater muscle mass on its limbs and body, and thus would have been "stronger." Sure, Vel's kick would be more deadly than Citi's, but everything else bespeaks of Citi's supriority. It is simply a matter of time before we find some poor Vel getting beaten up by an oviraptorid it sought to kill (as long as we expect to find oviraptorids as prey species).
