Aries

Aries, astrologically, is the head-strong initiator, ruled by his passions, desiring to cause and make cause. It is the act itself, and not the effects, that empassion him, and in this, Aries lives in the moment, with seldom thought for future things.

Mythologically, Aries was the golden-pelted flying ram (it may or may not have had wings) that flew Phrixus and Helle across the Dardanelles in Turkey escaping death; Helle, who fell from the ram, drowned in the Dardanelles, and it was named Hellespont (after the Latin form, "fountain of Helle" for this reason), and ended up landing on the shores of the Black Sea where Phrixus sacrified him in honor of Zeus and hung the pelt over a tree as a treasure, thus precipitation the tale of Jason and the Argonauts in their search for the Golden Fleece.

Aries is ruled by Mars, or "Ares" (the name is no coincidence), who is the God of War, and so combatively, this figure represents a combatant that seeks to fight close up, but waits (hence the posture, standing on one leg) for others to enact so that he may response. He is a reactionary, but initiates as easily as flowing wine.
